Chapter 5
by soul-beautyThe day when I came out of coma, Lance had told me that Albert had killed Alexander. I thought best to return to my pack, because I saw no future with Albert.
The next day, I heard from my pack members about Alexander’s funeral. And I decided to attend it.
I look at my reflection in the mirror. This is the second time that I’ll be attending a funeral. The first time was of my father’s, and from that day onwards, I hated funerals. I never attended another one until today.
I need to go to Alexander’s funeral.
When I’m flattening the creases on my dress, Lance enters my room and looks at me. “Where are you going, Elise?”
I look at him and know at one that he know where I am going. He just wants me to say it.
“I’m going to Alexander’s funeral.”
After hearing my answer, he becomes outraged, “You are going for the funeral of that person who almost killed you?!”
“Lance, he was my enemy when he was alive. But now he is dead. We shouldn’t hold grudges against the dead.” I reply.
I pass him by and head towards the front door. But before I could leave the house, Lance stops me.
“I’m coming with you.”
We are now in the parking space near the churchyard.
“Are you sure you want to attend his funeral? We can still drive our way back by now.” Lance asks me.
I nod.
We both leave the car and head towards the church. By the time we enter, most of the people are already settled. When the members of Dungeon Devour Pack see me, I hear them talking in hush voices. I guess they are wondering why I am here, at my murderer’s funeral. Lancelot and I ignore them and find ourselves two vacant seats.
Roslyn and her mother are sitting in the front row. She is only one year old younger than him. When Roslyn hears the whispers around her, she turns around and looks at me. Here eyes seem a bit blurry. We share a brief look before she returns her gaze back to Alexander’s coffin.
The priest starts the funeral by quoting verses from the Bible. Then, he invites people to say a few words about Alexander. After that, we all head to the burial ground outside to bury Alexander.
People start to returning to the church after Alexander is buried six feet under the ground. Roslyn and I are left standing near the grave. I come near her and stand by her side. She continues to look at her cousin’s grave.
“You know, his father’s death had a great impact on his life. My mother had refused to tell me the reason behind his father’s death, probably because she thought it was a shame for our family. But apparently, Alexander didn’t think so. Ever since the day he found out the truth about his father’s death, he was completely changed. I think that was the day when we lost him.”
“As the years went by, I started noticing changes in him. I could see the fire within him. He wanted to avenge his father’s death. I should have know that he would end up choosing the wrong path, but before I could do something to stop him, it was already too late.”
“When he found out that Albert’s mate belonged to your pack, he made a plan to attack and kill all the females in your pack. Because actually, he didn’t know exactly who she was. Boris and I tried to convince him not to execute his plan and that killing people simply won’t bring my uncle back, but he didn’t listen to us. He and his followers attacked your pack. But they failed.”
Then she turns to face me, “I’m ashamed of my cousin for what he did. I am ashamed to be his family and I don’t want to be associated with him. You must be wondering why I am confessing all this to you. I just wanted to get this off my chest. This burden is too much for me to carry.”
I nod and say to her, “I forgave him the moment you told me the truth.”
“Can I ask you something?” She asks and I nod.
“Why did you decide to come and attend Alexander’s funeral?”
